What the heck is going on in the Middle East? Governments being overthrown left and right, people everywhere on the streets protesting, videos popping up on YouTube?
Even though I am not the most informed person about the politics and history of the Arab world, I hope that these revolutions would be a change toward democracy. I also hope that the U.S. will support these efforts toward genuine democracy. The U.S. has had an ugly past of supporting oppressive and militant leaders and regimes as much as democracies in order to maintain global hegemony. I hope this time we will promote peace and self-determination in Arab and Islamic nations rather than supporting dictators to further self-seeking political and economic gains. Granted, it will be hard for democracy to grow and flourish in a region where authoritarian rule has been the norm for centuries (Russia is a good example of this).
